It is time to reassess both political and economic policies toward China.
Let us robustly support Prime Minister Takaichi.
China is escalating its “insults, provocations, threats, and harassment” against Japan.
China is now making false accusations against Prime Minister Takaichi’s response to the relentless questioning by Constitutional Democratic Party member Katsuya Okada, and is threatening that it must be withdrawn immediately. As if they formed a united front with China, the Constitutional Democratic Party continues demanding Prime Minister Takaichi ‘withdraw’ her statement.
I believe China has been displeased since the election of Takaichi as LDP president, because she won’t be pushed around by China.
In this case, Councilor Katsuya Okada’s assist simply provided China with an opportunity to threaten and harass Prime Minister Takaichi.
Once again, it has become abundantly clear that our relationship with China carries nothing but risk.
China seems to lack the concept of building win-win relationships. It likely only considers its own interests.
And it has become clear that China uses not only political and economic measures, but also private exchanges as a measure of retribution against countries that won’t be pushed around.
In other words, it has been proven that excessive dependence on China only creates risk.
It is a good opportunity to reassess our policy toward China to mitigate future risks.
We strongly request an urgent consideration of the following points.
Enactment of a Law Banning Exports of Marine Products to China
China refuses to purchase Japanese marine products, even though ALPS treated water is recognized by the IAEA, by falsely accusing it of being contaminated water.
The enactment of this law is a wonderful news for China.
Japan’s limited marine products should only be delivered to countries that appreciate their deliciousness.
Stricter immigration screening for arrivals from China, and re-examination of residents
We must re-evaluate issues such as overtourism and welfare benefits.
The most critical factor is that China has the “National Defense Mobilization Law” and the “National Intelligence Law”, making risk hedging essential.
Also, re-examination is necessary for students from China, including those at the seven Schools of National Defense.
Enactment of the Anti-Espionage Bill for Classified Information
Those individuals and organizations opposing this bill argue that it constitutes a violation of human rights.
However, we do not want a lawless country (anarchy) where anything goes.
Classified information includes not only national secrets but also certain industrial and academic information.
We plan to cover this topic in a separate post.
Here is the sequence of events since former Prime Minister Ishiba announced his resignation. This sequence makes it clear that China is not welcoming the emergence of a Takaichi Prime Minister following the election of LDP President Takaichi.
It is regrettable that some Diet members are acting as if they are assisting China, and we feel this is extremely dangerous for Japan.
Here, let’s briefly review the sequence of events.
1. New Komeito leader Saito meddles in the Liberal Democratic Party(hereinafter called LDP) of Japan presidential election with malicious intent, stating, ”If a right-wing person becomes LDP president, we will terminate the LDP-New Komeito coalition government”.
2. Councilor Takaichi becomes the first female LDP president.
3. New Komeito leader Saito meets with the Chinese ambassador.
4. New Komeito announces withdrawal from the LDP-New Komeito coalition government.
5. The Constitutional Democratic Party(hereinafter called CDP) of Japan proposes voting for Democratic Party For the People (hereinafter called DPP) leader Tamaki as Prime Minister.
6. Suddenly, Japan Innovation Party (hereinafter called JIP) announces the start of discussion toward a coalition government with the LDP.
7. LDP and JIP establish coalition government.
8. LDP President Sanae Takaichi elected as Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
9. China does not send congratulatory telegram to Prime Minister Takaichi.
10. Debate in Diet with CDP member Katsuya Okada. (questions mentioning specific country/region names)
11. Prime Minister Takaichi’s statement. (never mentioned specific country names)
12. Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Osaka makes remarks to Prime Minister Takaichi that could be interpreted as suggesting murder.
13. China escalates “insults, provocations, threats, and harassment” toward Japan. Also, it successively implements economic harassment.
14. CDP member Katsuya Okada makes China-friendly statements, stating he “gave Prime Minister Takaichi an opportunity to retract”.
How do you think about this sequence of events ?
1. New Komeito leader Saito meddles in the Liberal Democratic Party(hereinafter called LDP) of Japan presidential election with malicious intent, stating, ”If a right-wing person becomes LDP president, we will terminate the LDP-New Komeito coalition government”.
This comment was clearly aimed at Councilor Sanae Takaichi, and it was blocking the emergence of a Takaichi Prime Minister from this point. (Reason stated in 4.)
Also, we feel this statement constitutes malicious meddling in the LDP presidential election.
2. Councilor Takaichi becomes the first female LDP president.
This was the moment the collapsed LDP managed to hold its ground.
Until just before this, we felt the LDP and CDP would merge to continue a left-wing administration.
3. New Komeito leader Saito meets with the Chinese ambassador.
4. New Komeito announces withdrawal from the LDP-New Komeito coalition government.
New Komeito party should have anticipated that various speculations would be rife immediately after meeting with the Chinese ambassador.
Even so, we believe there must have been reasons for withdrawing from the LDP-New Komeito coalition government.
NEW Komeito explains that the reason for withdrawing from the coalition government is the “politics and money” issue. But are they noticing the contradiction in their statement that ‘if it were an Ishiba administration, there would have been no withdrawal’ ?
5. The Constitutional Democratic Party(hereinafter called CDP) of Japan proposes voting for Democratic Party For the People (hereinafter called DPP) leader Tamaki as Prime Minister.
They likely believed they could take power from minority party in power. And they probably thought that even if the prime minister came from the DPP, they could secure many ministerial posts based on their larger number of members.
It is clear that with such significant differences on core security and economic policies essential to governing, this coalition government would be a disorderly crowd.
6. Suddenly, Japan Innovation Party (hereinafter called JIP) announces the start of discussion toward a coalition government with the LDP.
This sudden announcement came immediately after party leader discussions with the Constitutional Democratic Party and the Democratic Party of Japan, clearly demonstrating that a coalitional government cannot be formed with parties having significant differences on core security and economic policies.
7. LDP and JIP establish coalition government.
8. LDP President Sanae Takaichi elected as Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
Even combining the LDP and the JIP, they do not hold a majority. However, she secured a majority and was appointed as Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
9. China does not send congratulatory telegram to Prime Minister Takaichi.
China sent congratulatory messages to Councilor Kishida and Councilor Ishiba when they became Prime Minister, but did not send one to Prime Minister Takaichi.
This clearly shows China does not welcome Prime Minister Takaichi.
We believe China was waiting for an opportunity to criticize Prime Minister Takaichi.
10. Debate in Diet with CDP member Katsuya Okada. (questions mentioning specific country/region names)
We feel this created an opportunity to criticize Prime Minister Takaichi for China’s benefit.
11. Prime Minister Takaichi’s statement. (never mentioned specific country names)
12. Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Osaka makes remarks to Prime Minister Takaichi that could be interpreted as suggesting murder.
If a Japanese person made such remarks, it would undoubtedly become a police investigation case.
We don’t think we need to engage deeply with a country where such statements can be made.
13. China escalates “insults, provocations, threats, and harassment” toward Japan. Also, it successively implements economic harassment.
China has urged its citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan. Additionally, it has effectively halted imports of Japanese marine products.
Also, threats and harassment that cast doubt on the nation’s dignity continue.
14. CDP member Katsuya Okada makes China-friendly statements, stating he “gave Prime Minister Takaichi an opportunity to retract”.
Again, Prime Minister Takaichi simply stated as a general assumption that the nation would defend itself if faced with an existential crisis. She never mentioned any specific country by name.
It feels like this statement can only be interpreted as acting on China’s behalf.
China’s Economic Harassment
China is harassing Japan not only through economic retaliation like the effectively halted import of marine products, but also by using even private exchanges such as urging its citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan as a means of retaliation.
China’s miscalculation is that it is too focused on hegemony and has misread the trends of the times.
In an era where the old media dominated, it might have been possible to manipulate public opinion by exaggerating reports of the damage suffered by Japan. However, now thatSNS has become mainstream, the biased stance of the old media has been widely recognized.
Also, many citizens using SNS have gained the ability to express their own opinions and select the information they need.
Even individuals once called the silent majority who support Prime Minister Takaichi are now voicing their opinions.
Currently, many voices welcome the Chinese travel restraint to Japan, and more Japanese citizens are visiting the now quieter tourist spots.
What is the true intent behind Councilor Katsuya Okada’s questioning ?
Currently, there is significant criticism directed at the CDP and Councilor Katsuya Okada.
Both Councilor Katsuya Okada himself and the CDP have countered this criticism, but it only deepens the suspicions.
Taro Sugimura and Tatsuyuki Takaoka have asked, “Who benefits from Councilor Katsuya Okada’s questioning ?”
In fact, only Councilor Katsuya Okada specifically named countries or regions.
As a result, China began insulting, provoking, threatening, and harassing Prime Minister Takaichi.
Councilor Katsuya Okada stated that “we (the CDP) gave her the opportunity to retract her remarks”.
In other words, Councilor Katsuya Okada himself is saying he is acting as China’s spokesperson.
He is trying to force Japan’s Prime Minister to retract a hypothetical statement that, “If the nation faces an existential crisis, we will defend the nation”.
Do you understand ?
He is telling Japan’s Prime Minister to abandon national defense.
It makes perfect sense why the CDP is so vehemently opposed to discussions about increasing defense spending.
The statements from the CDP and Councilor Okada seem to suggest that “China’s invasion of Taiwan is a domestic affair and should not be intervened in”.
However, China has never actually governed Taiwan. In other words, the CDP and Councilor Okada are accepting that if China simply declares “it is our territory”, then that place becomes Chinese territory.
China even claims the Senkaku Islands which are inherent Japanese territory as Chinese territory, and violates Japan’s territorial waters almost daily.
Does this mean the CDP and Councilor Okada are claiming that Taiwan and the Senkaku Islands are Chinese territory, and therefore we should not intervene in their domestic affairs ?
In any case, it feels like the CDP is accepting China’s invasion of other countries.
Regarding this matter, CDP leader Noda stated, “We have no reason to be criticized”.
The Japanese people hold the right to pass judgment on Diet members.
In the next election, the people must make their judgment clear.
Should any unforeseen incident occur involving Prime Minister Takaichi, it would become necessary to revisit and reexamine events all the way back to the incident involving Prime Minister Abe.
This would become a major national issue. It would escalate into an extremely serious problem including Instigation of Foreign Aggression.
It is important for many citizens to support Prime Minister Takaichi to prevent such a situation from occurring.
