It is time to reassess both political and economic policies toward China.

We should have really robust support for Prime Minister Takaichi.

China is escalating its ‘insults, provocations, threats, and harassment’ against Japan.
They are making baseless accusations against the statements made by Prime Minister Takaichi in the previous Diet session and threatening to backpedal immediately.
This is probably just an excuse, and we think they simply cannot accept the emergence of a prime minister who will not get their way.
In other words, we feel they were just waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack the Takaichi administration.

Once again, it has become clear that our relationship with China carries nothing but risks.

China seems to lack the concept of building win-win relationships. It likely only considers its own interests.
Also, it has become clear that China uses not only political and economic means but even private exchanges as a means of retaliation against countries that do not comply with its wishes.
In other words, over-reliance on China has been proven to be nothing but a risk.

We think this is a good opportunity to reassess our policy toward China to mitigate future risks.
We want to request urgent consideration of the following points.

Enactment of a Law Banning Exports of Seafood Products to China
China is refusing to buy Japanese marine products, even though the treated water is recognized by the IAEA, by accusing it of being contaminated water.
Therefore, the enactment of this law is welcome news for China.
Japan’s limited marine products should be delivered to countries that appreciate their deliciousness.

Stricter immigration screening for arrivals from China and re-examination of residents
Generally discussed issues like overtourism and welfare benefits also require thorough re-evaluation.
However, the most critical factor is China’s National Intelligence Law, making risk hedging absolutely essential.
Furthermore, re-assessments are necessary for Chinese students, including those at Seven Schools of National Defense.

Enactment of the Anti-Espionage Bill for classified information
Opponents of this bill argue that it constitutes a violation of human rights.
However, we do not want a lawless country (anarchy) where anything goes.
Classified information includes not only state secrets but also certain industrial and academic information.
We plan to cover this topic in a future post.

Here is a brief summary of events since former Prime Minister Ishiba announced his resignation. This suggests that China may have rejected Prime Minister Takaichi from the recent LDP presidential election.
However, it is regrettable that some Diet members are acting as if to assist this effort, and we feel this behavior is extremely dangerous for Japan.

Here, let’s briefly review the sequence of events.

1. Komeito leader Saito meddles in the Liberal Democratic Party(hereinafter called LDP) of Japan presidential election, stating his party will withdraw from the LDP-Komeito coalition government if a right-wing person becomes president.
2. Takaichi becomes the first female president of the LDP.
3. Komeito leader Saito meets with the Chinese ambassador.
4. Komeito announces its withdrawal from the LDP-Komeito coalition government.
5. The Constitutional Democratic Party(hereinafter called CDP) of Japan proposes voting for Democratic Party For the People (hereinafter called DPP) leader Tamaki.
6. Suddenly, Nippon Ishin no Kai announces the start of discussion toward a coalition government with the LDP.
7. LDP and Japan Innovation Party establish a coalition government.
8. LDP President Sanae Takaichi elected as Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
9. China did not send a congratulatory telegram to Prime Minister Takaichi.
10. Debate in Diet with the CDP member Katsuya Okada. (Questions mentioning specific country or region names)
11. Prime Minister Takaichi’s statement. (Never mentioned specific country names)
12. Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Osaka makes a remark to Prime Minister Takaichi that could be interpreted as suggesting murder.
13. China escalates ‘insults, provocations, threats, and harassment’ against Japan. Furthermore, it is successively implementing economic harassment.
14. The CDP member Katsuya Okada countered with “opportunity to backtrack was given”

How do you think about this sequence of events?

This is purely our perspective, but I will note the comments.

1. Komeito leader Saito meddles in the Liberal Democratic Party(hereinafter called LDP) of Japan presidential election, stating his party will withdraw from the LDP-Komeito coalition government if a right-wing person becomes president.
We feel this comment was clearly intended to target Councilor Sanae Takaichi. The reason is embedded in 4.
We personally believe this statement is malicious meddling in the LDP presidential election.

2. Takaichi becomes the first female president of the LDP.
I feel this is the moment when the near collapse of the LDP was held on the very edge.
Until just before the LDP presidential election, we couldn’t find any difference between the policies of the LDP and the CDP, and we suspected they intended to merge and continue the left-wing government.

3. Komeito leader Saito meets with the Chinese ambassador.
4. Komeito announces its withdrawal from the LDP-Komeito coalition government.
The Komeito party should have anticipated that various speculations would be rife immediately after meeting with the Chinese ambassador.
Even so, we feel there must have been a reason for them to withdraw from the LDP-Komeito coalition government.
Komeito states the reason for withdrawing from the coalition government is the issue of “politics and money”. However, they have made contradictory statements, such as “If it had been an Ishiba administration, we wouldn’t have withdrawn”.

5. The Constitutional Democratic Party(hereinafter called CDP) of Japan proposes voting for the DPP leader Tamaki.
They must have thought they could take power from the minority government the LDP. They must also have believed that even if the prime minister came from the DPP, the CDP would hold the real power in the administration due to its larger number of Diet members.
6. Suddenly, Nippon Ishin no Kai announces the start of discussion toward a coalition government with the LDP.
This sudden announcement came immediately after meetings with the leaders of the CDP and the DPP, clearly showing that a coalition government with parties holding fundamentally different positions on security and economic policy is impossible.
7. LDP and Japan Innovation Party establish a coalition government.
8. LDP President Sanae Takaichi elected as Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
The combined seats of the LDP and the Japan Innovation Party fall short of a majority. However, she secured a majority and was appointed as Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
9. China did not send a congratulatory telegram to Prime Minister Takaichi.
China sent congratulatory messages to Councilor Kishida and Councilor Ishiba when they became Prime Minister, but did not send one to Prime Minister Takaichi.
This clearly shows China does not welcome Prime Minister Takaichi.
It can be speculated that China was waiting for the right moment to criticize Prime Minister Takaichi.

10. Debate in Diet with the CDP member Katsuya Okada. (Questions mentioning specific country or region names)
11. Prime Minister Takaichi’s statement. (Never mentioned specific country names)
12. Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Osaka makes a remark to Prime Minister Takaichi that could be interpreted as suggesting murder.
If a Japanese person made such a statement, it would undoubtedly become a police investigation case.
We don’t think we need to engage too deeply with a country where such statements can be made.

13. China escalates ‘insults, provocations, threats, and harassment’ against Japan. Furthermore, it is successively implementing economic harassment.
China has urged its citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan. Furthermore, it has halted imports of marine products from Japan.
Additionally, threats and insults posting that cast doubt on the nation’s dignity continue.

14. The CDP member Katsuya Okada countered with “opportunity to backtrack was given”
Once again, Prime Minister Takaichi merely stated that the general assumption is that the state would defend itself if faced with an existential crisis. At this time, she never mentioned any specific country by name.

China’s Economic Pressure

China is harassing Japan not only through economic harassment like ‘‘the halting imports of marine products‘, but also by using private exchanges as a means of harassment like ‘‘the refraining from travel to Japan’’.
China’s miscalculation is that it is too focused on hegemony and has misread the trends of the times.
In an era where old media dominated, it might have been possible to exaggerate reports of damage suffered by Japan to influence public opinion. However, now that SNS has become mainstream, the biased stance of old media has become clear. Furthermore, many citizens using SNS can now express their own opinions and select the information they need.
Furthermore, those referred to as the silent majority who support Prime Minister Takaichi are now voicing their opinions.
Consequently, many voices are welcoming China’s refrain from travel to Japan, and more citizens are going to quieter tourist spots.

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan

What is the true intent behind Councilor Katsuya Okada’s questioning?
Currently, there is significant criticism of the DPJ and Councilor Katsuya Okada.
Both Councilor Okada himself and the DPJ have countered this criticism, but it only deepens the suspicions.
Taro Sugimura and Tatsuyuki Takaoka have stated, “Who benefits from Councilor Katsuya Okada’s questioning?”
Indeed, Councilor Katsuya Okada was the only one to mention specific country or region names.
We also feel he wanted to make an opportunity to attack China’s Prime Minister Takaichi.

Additionally, Councilor Katsuya Okada stated, “We (the CDP) gave her the opportunity to backtrack.”They are trying to force Japan’s Prime Minister to backtrack on a hypothetical statement she made: “If the nation faces an existential crisis, we will defend the nation.”
Do you understand? They are telling Japan’s Prime Minister to abandon national defense.
That’s why we now understand why they are so strongly opposed to increasing defense spending.

From Councilor Okada’s question, it seemed he was saying that China’s invasion of Taiwan is an internal political matter and should not be interfered with.
Despite never having governed Taiwan, China simply claims Taiwan as Chinese territory.
Furthermore, China claims the Senkaku Islands which are Japan’s inherent territory as Chinese territory, and violates Japan’s territorial waters almost daily.
The CDP believes that even if China invades Taiwan, it will not invade the Senkaku Islands ?
Or is the CDP saying that both Taiwan and the Senkaku Islands are internal political matters because it accepts everything China says as correct ?
In other words, it feels like the CDP is accepting China’s invasion of other countries using its overwhelming military power.

However, Constitutional Democratic Party leader Noda is taking a strong stance, saying “we have no reason to be criticized.”
This attitude might be typical of left-wing people. It feels like they’re saying, ”We’re teaching you a lesson because what we say is right.”
Do they understand that the Japanese citizens have the right to elect their Diet members ?

Should any emergency arise involving Prime Minister Takaichi, it would become necessary to revisit and reexamine events all the way back to the incident involving Prime Minister Abe.
This would become a major national issue. It would escalate into an extremely serious matter, potentially involving charges of ‘instigation of foreign aggression’.

However, it is important for many citizens to support Prime Minister Takaichi to prevent such an emergency situation.
